Picking out the appropriate office supplies, furniture accessories, and other supporting items is essential to operating an efficient business.  Finding suitable equipment and supplies is one of the most significant aspects of designing your professional work area.

Of course, when arranging your workspace, you already know you need a desk and chair. When choosing these items you are most likely searching for items that will not let you down. This is true no matter what combination of items you select.

Today’s recommended desks for the modern achiever most likely are the tabletop variety, and are often accompanied with one of the following popular chair models: mesh net-weave, high-back roller leather, ribbed leather, reading chairs, and arm chairs.

However, you might not know what other accessories, furnishings, and organizational items would help you become most efficient. Other supporting office supplies furniture and accessories that would be most helpful include the following: bench, shelf, table, file cabinet, contract table, or other items used in your line of business.

Most recommended materials used for creating superior business equipment include chrome, solid wood, leather, mesh, or hopsack. The models of each item that you would choose will highly depend upon the type of item you would purchase.

Selection Tips

Depending upon what type of business you run, your needs may vary. For instance, maybe you are a lawyer and you need a small contract dining table. Either that or perhaps you run a private medical practice and therefore you need a waiting room bench.

Of course, the styles, colours, and size of the items you choose will most likely be subject to availability.  Furthermore, the size of space you work in matters a great deal. Therefore, you should measure the space where you place to plan each item.

Importance of Selection

Picking Out the appropriate equipment, supplies, and so on is also essential to operating an efficient business.  Finding suitable furniture is one of the most significant aspects when designing the space where you spend a huge amount of your waking hours.

Not only should it be functional, but it should also be comfortable. After all, you are dedicated to your work so you are entitled to make your designated project area feel like home.

In case you have no idea how potentially beneficial the right selection of office supplies, furniture, and accessories really can be, make an effort to find out. Start by updating with a few small items and you are likely to immediately be able to observe the difference.

Unless you are planning a big budget for your kitchen, solid wood cabinets are most likely not an option. For new homeowners, or people that have never bought kitchen cabinets before, it is not uncommon to get a surprised reaction when they hear that there are very few cabinet makers that use solid wood for the entire cabinet (unless you are having custom cabinets built and specifying that they use solid wood).

There are several reasons why solid wood is not used for the cabinet box anymore, but the biggest reason being that it is just too expensive. To use solid wood for the entire cabinet would put them out of the price range of just about 90% of consumers. The other reason being that there are several engineered products that are just as strong, but can be 1/2-2/3 the cost of real wood. Ofcourse, not all engineered products offer the same strength and durability, so it is important to scrutinize the materials used to manufacture the cabinets. The majority of cabinet manufacturers are still using solid wood for the face frames and doors (the most exposed parts of the cabinet), but here are some of the common materials you will find that are being used for the cabinet box.

Particleboard

Particleboard is made of exactly what is sounds like… wood particles. This usually consists of wood chips layered and pressed together using a resin or glue to hold it together. Since it is made up of smaller chips, it doesn’t offer the same strength when it comes to holding screws and nails. Screws and nail holds will have a tendency to weaken over time, even splintering apart. Particleboard is also prone to moisture damage if not protected properly.

Fiberboard

Think of fiberboard as an extra thick and more dense cardboard. It is actually made up of wood fibers tightly pressed together and held together by a wood epoxy or glue mixture. While a thick fiberboard can be a tough material, it is highly susceptible to moisture. This usually results in swelling or warping of the material, and it will retain the water. Fiberboard will also require a veneer or paper with a wood pattern to finish it off, which can have a tendency to peel away.

MDF

MDF or Medium Density Fiberboard is a heavy dense material. It is a combination of wood chips, fibers, and resin or epoxy which makes for a strong material. The biggest drawback to MDF is splintering or chipping. If thick enough, it can hold as much weight as real wood, but it is will be affected by water or moisture.

Plywood

This is my preference when it comes to cabinet construction. Plywood is a series of thinly sliced layers of wood where the grain is alternated. The layers of wood are then glued and pressed together. Plywood offers the greatest strength because of the alternating grain patterns which helps dispurse the weight. Plywood is also less likely to be affected by moisture because it doesn’t allow the water to penetrate into the bonding agent.

When it comes to overall strength and durability for your cabinets, it is highly recommended that you focus on cabinets that feature a solid plywood cabinet box. Not only will your cabinets last longer, but they will be less likely to be affected by the moisture associated with normal kitchen use.

Wood is a great material for kitchen cabinets because it is timeless and doesn’t go out of fashion. Remember those 1970s bright orange kitchens and mushroom or turquoise bathrooms that everybody spends money on ripping out and replacing when they move into a house? Well, you don’t want a kitchen that will go out of fashion in a few years or put off potential buyers when it comes to selling your house, choose wood for long lasting style.

There are companies who make and sell handmade luxury wooden kitchens which are custom designed for your kitchen and your requirements – great for an awkward shaped kitchen. They will also be able to advise you on layout and storage solutions.

Wooden cabinets come in many different woods, colours and stains – there is a huge choice so you won’t be at all limited.

Light coloured woods include pine, birch, maple, oak, alder, beech, chestnut, elm, ash and hickory.

Rich coloured and dark woods include cherry, mahogany, ebony, walnut, rosewood, butternut and teak.

Wood cabinets can be either varnished or stained. A clear varnish allows the natural colour and grain of the wood to show through while protecting the wood. Unfinished pine cabinets look great, but if they are not protected with a varnish or UV protector, they can yellow. Stains do not protect wood, unless they have an added protector, but they colour woods. You can get many different colours and finishes in stains and varnishes. Here are some tips:-

1. For a natural finish, to see the natural colour and grain of the wood, use a clear varnish or a transparent stain.

2. An opaque stain will cover the grain in the wood.

3. Use colour names on cans of stain only as a guide. Purchase tester pots and use on a sample of wood to show the real colour, because woods have different porosity and stains will look different on different woods.

Caring for Wooden Cabinets

Once you have chosen your wooden cabinets, you will need to know how to care for them properly. Solid wood can be affected by temperatures and by the humidity of a kitchen and can warp and crack. Here are some tips on how to care for your wooden cabinets:-

1. Buy cleaning products for wooden cabinets or just use washing up liquid and water. Avoid harsh and abrasive cleaners.

2. Wipe clean with a cloth dampened with a very mild cleaner and dry with a clean, dry cloth.

3. Avoid cleaners containing wax or silicone – Wax can build up on surfaces and silicone can damage the the finish.

4. Take particular care of cabinets near the sink, dishwasher, hob and oven – These cabinets are likely to get wet and dirty. Dry off any splashes and clean stains immediately.

5. Do not hang damp cloths or towels over a cabinet door or leave touching a door. You do not want the wood to absorb any moisture.

6. Use a clean cloth for cleaning, not your general dishcloth which may be dirty.

7. Be careful when you are cleaning the oven. Do not let any oven cleaner or grease come into contact with wooden cabinets.

Accidents can and will happen so follow this advice to prevent permanent damage to your lovely wood cabinets:-

Water splashes or food spillages – Wipe immediately with soap and water or washing up liquid and water. Dry with a clean cloth.

Grease based stains – Use a dampened cloth to clean and then dry. Seek advice from your cabinet maker if the stain remains.

Candle wax or chewing gum – Freeze by using a bag of ice or an ice block. The wax or gum should become brittle and break into pieces. Clean area with mild detergent and dry well with a clean cloth.

Burns and scratches – Seek advice from the cabinet maker. You may be able to sand off the mark and re-stain but it is best to get advice and the cabinet maker may be able to repair the damage.

Dents and holes – Again seek advice from the cabinet maker. The company should be able to repair the damage by filling the hole or dent and re-staining or varnishing.

Remember to treat solid wood kitchen cabinets as carefully as other wooden furniture. The proper care will have them looking good for many years.
